Thornbury & District Stroke Support Group
The Group was formed during the International Year of the Disabled in 1981, it has been supporting victims of stroke in the area ever since, and is affiliated to the Stroke Association.
The aims of the group are:
To relieve the needs of persons who have suffered a stroke, in particular by the
provision of support, advice, recreation and other leisure time occupation to
such persons, their carers and families with the object of improving their
conditions of life
The Group at present supports 30 stroke victims with 45 volunteers, the volunteers organise the various activities and provide transport. New volunteers are always needed particularly those willing to provide transport.
The activities attract good support from members and consist of::
1. Weekly swimming sessions at the Thornbury Leisure Centre during their medical swimming hour.
2. In the summer months fortnightly visits and outings to places of interest.
3. An annual 4/5 day holiday to the John Groom Hotel at Minehead.
4. From September to April weekly meetings are held in the Jubilee Hall Alveston.
Social meetings and talks, alternating with an Art group.
5. Fortnightly indoor bowls is another winter activity.
All these activities are very important in the rehabilitation of stroke members and very rewarding for those volunteers who help.
Financial support from local organisations and donations are a major help in enabling the group to support those in need in our own community, and help our own fund raising activities.
