Thornbury & District Stroke Support Group

The Group was formed during the International Year of the Disabled in 1981, it has been supporting victims of stroke in the area ever since, and is affiliated to the Stroke Association.
The aims of the group are:
1. To encourage stroke sufferers with their rehabilitation.
2. To relieve and support relatives involved in the full time care of stroke victims.
3. To help especially those who live alone to regain sufficient confidence to remain in their own homes.
4. To provide leisure and social activities and transport as required.
The Group at present supports 28 stroke victims with 40 volunteers, the volunteers organise the various activities and provide transport. New volunteers are always needed particularly those willing to provide transport.
The activities attract good support from members and consist of::
1. Weekly swimming sessions at the Thornbury Leisure Centre during their medical swimming hour.
2. In the summer months fortnightly visits and outings to places of interest.
3. An annual 4/5 day holiday to the John Groom Hotel at Minehead.
4. From September to April weekly meetings are held in the Jubilee Hall Alveston.
Social meetings and talks, alternating with an Art group.
5. Fortnightly indoor bowls is another winter activity.
All these activities are very important in the rehabilitation of stroke members and very rewarding for those volunteers who help.
Financial support from local organisations and donations are a major help in enabling the group to support those in need in our own community, and help our own fund raising activities.
